5 Warning Signs of a Termite Infestation
Termites can silently destroy the structural integrity of your home. Early detection is key to preventing extensive damage. Here’s how to recognize an infestation before it’s too late:
1. Mud Tubes
Subterranean termites build narrow, mud-like tunnels along walls, foundations, and crawl spaces. These tubes protect them from predators and dehydration while they forage for food.
2. Discarded Wings
During the swarming season, reproductive termites (alates) shed their wings after finding a new nesting location. If you find piles of small, transparent wings near windows, doors, or outdoor lights, a termite colony could be nearby.
3. Hollow-Sounding Wood
Termites consume wood from the inside out, leaving the exterior intact. If you knock on a wooden surface and it sounds hollow or crumbles easily, there may be hidden termite damage inside.
4. Frass (Termite Droppings)
Drywood termites push out tiny wood-colored droppings from their tunnels. These appear as small, granular mounds resembling sawdust or pepper, often found near wooden structures.
5. Warped Doors and Windows
Termites produce moisture as they consume wood, which can cause wooden doors and window frames to warp. Difficulty opening or closing doors and windows could be a red flag for an infestation.
